Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
