"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly begged for the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"So all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience called for a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However the band will forever be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
