An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.

He said that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in every modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions habits.
